IN LATE MARCH 1864, the literary-political monthly magazine Epoch (issues 1-2, 4) hosted the confession of a peculiar man. The text, titled Notes from Underground, was signed by Fyodor Dostoevsky, publisher of the magazine along with his brother Mikhail.
Notes from Underground foreshadow the great novels of Dostoevsky's maturity. The anonymous narrator is the classic figure of Russian literature, the embittered, low-ranking clerk who abandoned a prudent life in favor of nihilism. Through a simultaneous attack on the atheistic bourgeois society and utopian socialism, which many of Dostoevsky's contemporaries saw as an alternative to the former, the story of the book exposes the forces of the absurd that lie beneath all human endeavors, even those inspired by lofty ideals.
However, even in the darkest moments, Dostoevsky finds room not only for subtle humor but also for the possibility of redemptive love, embodied in suffering characters and, above all, in the character of Liza.
This short work is a milestone in the author's bibliography, not only for its narrative style but, above all, for the fundamental philosophical questions it raises, for the first time so completely and unreservedly—questions that would be revisited in his great subsequent novels, which established him worldwide as one of the most important literary figures. Many of Dostoevsky's old and modern scholars, such as V.V. Rozanov, consider it a "cornerstone" of his literary oeuvre.
The critic and close friend of the author, N. Strakhov, emphasizes that with the same insight with which he "managed to look into the soul of the underground man, with the same insight he knows how to depict all the various forms of moral hesitation, all the forms of suffering generated by moral instability."
"Does reason err as to what is beneficial? And what if man does not like only happiness? And what if he likes misfortune just as much? Perhaps misfortune is exactly as beneficial as happiness. Sometimes man likes suffering terribly, to the point of passion, and this is a fact. In this regard, there is no need to refer to world history; if you are truly human and have lived even a little, just ask yourself. As for my personal opinion, to like only happiness is even indecent."
