Description

Traditional Greek flute, made of wood and crafted from reed. It features six holes and is in the key of C. This flute offers very easy blowing and produces a soft and warm sound.

The thiamboli or syráuli is a wind instrument similar to a flute with an open bottom end. The top end is cut diagonally and closed with a cork, which leaves only a thin slit. Just after the cork, there is a rectangular hole through which air passes and produces a whistling sound.

It is often found in the Aegean islands and Crete, as well as in some areas of Macedonia and Thrace. Known by various names, such as pithkiavli in Cyprus or sifrochámpio in Crete. Most often, it is made from reed and less frequently from wood or metal. The syráuli belongs to those instruments that are handcrafted by the performer and can be played either alone or accompanied by a leather percussion instrument, such as the tumbi (Naxos and Crete).
