Mountain tea, also known as Sideritis, is a popular Greek herb with many beneficial properties. Due to its high iron content, it is considered a strong shield against colds and has antihypertensive, antioxidant, and antithrombotic action. It is rich in flavonoids that strengthen the circulatory and cardiovascular system.
Mountain tea is rarely found in mountainous and semi-mountainous areas of the Mediterranean, and in Greece it grows wild in most regions, such as in Pindos, Taygetos, and Samothraki under the name Sideritis Athoa, as well as in Olympus and Pelion as Sideritis Scardica.
The preparation of the tea can be done either as a hot or cold infusion. For a hot infusion, pour boiling water over one or two sprigs and let it steep for 3 to 5 minutes. For a cold version, after preparing the hot infusion, let it cool slightly and shake with ice cubes in a shaker. It can be served plain or with additions such as honey, agave, or maple syrup.
