Description:

Powerful yet soothing astringent that is considered a specific remedy for childhood diarrhea and dysentery. It is used for mucus colitis and is helpful for nasal congestion in combination with other herbs. For external use, it is prepared as a mouthwash for inflammatory conditions of the mouth or tongue, as gargles for laryngitis or pharyngitis, and for vaginal douches against leukorrhea. It has been used as an ointment for hemorrhoids and anal fissures.

The above-ground part of the plant is considered diuretic, litholytic, and antichlorhydric, and in Crete, it is considered effective against kidney and bladder stones. It is used in herbal mixtures or alone to address these problems. The decoction of the plant is used against stomach acidity, digestive ulcers, intestinal worms, colds, and traveler's nausea. It acts as an appetizer and helps with digestion by neutralizing gas. It increases sweating and has expectorant action. It stimulates and tones the body and is beneficial for dizziness. It is useful in body disorders due to excessive heat. The concentrated decoction is a good laxative and helps with sore throat and toothache.

When used in a poultice (with the plant crushed), it helps against bee stings, while compresses made from leaves are beneficial for swelling and nausea. It stimulates the uterus and the nervous system. The oil of the plant is used on external wounds as a healing agent. A few drops of it in the bath stimulate and rejuvenate the function of the genital glands. The decoction as gargles has a healing effect on wounds of the larynx and mouth.

How to use: For treatment of stones in the kidneys or bladder, the herb is prepared as a decoction. Boil 6 grams of the dry herb in 2.5 cups of water for 10 minutes. Strain and drink half in the morning and the rest in the afternoon for 10 days.
