Description
Dandelion is considered to have diuretic, laxative, cholagogue, and anti-rheumatic properties. It has been used for cholecystitis, gallstones, jaundice, atonic dyspepsia with constipation, muscular rheumatism, and oliguria. The root is used along with celandine and artichoke for epigastric discomfort resulting from functional disorders of the hepatobiliary system.
It is one of the strongest diuretics. It stimulates kidney function but has a significant advantage. Overactive kidneys cause potassium loss from the body through diuresis, which exacerbates existing cardiovascular problems. Dandelion is one of the best natural sources of potassium. Thus, it is an ideally balanced diuretic that can be safely used when a diuretic effect is required, even in cases of fluid retention due to heart problems.
As a cholagogue, it can be used for inflammation and congestion of the liver and gallbladder. It is a specific remedy for obstructive jaundice. It is particularly effective for muscular rheumatism and a valuable general tonic, possibly the top widely applicable diuretic and liver tonic. It has been traditionally used for controlling diabetes. For liver and gallbladder issues, it can be combined with bearberry or turtle shell. For fluid retention, it is combined with wild fennel or yarrow.
How to use: It is prepared as an infusion. Add 2-3 teaspoons of leaves to a cup of water and simmer on low heat for 2 minutes. Turn off the heat, cover it for 10 minutes, strain, and drink three times a day. The root is boiled for 10-15 minutes. The leaves can also be eaten raw in salads.
