The present Turkish-Greek dictionary by Pavlakis Melitopoulos was published in a limited edition in Istanbul in 1934 and is considered one of the best Turkish-Greek dictionaries. The author dedicated a lot of time to its compilation and utilized the Turkish dictionaries of Tarama Derneği, Şemsettin Sami, Kamûsı Türkî (1901), and the two-volume Turkish-Greek dictionary by Ioannis Chloros (1899-1900).
It consists of 598 pages with entries of old Ottoman words in strict alphabetical order. At the end, there are geographical terms, names of countries, ancient and modern Greek cities in the Turkish language, and an appendix of Turkish words. It also includes 10 pages of Turkish words formed during the years 1935-1936.
This is the first Turkish-Greek dictionary after the founding of the Turkish Republic, written in Latin characters, whereas the Turkish language was written in Arabic characters until 1928.
Melitopoulos' dictionary was for decades the only one used in Turkey and Greece and was rare and hard to find.
It is believed that the dictionary will prove particularly useful and beneficial, filling a gap, for those interested in the two countries.
