The bicentennial of the Greek Revolution has led to the writing of numerous valuable (and less valuable) studies, prompting a comprehensive reevaluation of 1821 in Greek and international literature.
However, this historiographical production, for the most part, hesitates to reassess the Struggle as a political and social phenomenon, considering a time span that extends before the end of the 18th century.
This study aims to address this historiographical gap by tracing the path of the myth of the "resurrection" of the Eastern Roman Empire, a powerful symbolic narrative that originated in the late Byzantine world but influenced the development and initial shaping of Greek nationalism.
