Historical Background and Plant Morphology: Rue (Ruta graveolens) is a perennial plant bearing small yellowish-green flowers and a characteristic strong odor. It has been used since ancient times for therapeutic purposes, while the ancient Greeks and Romans considered it protective against magic. In Greek tradition, it was known for its bitter taste and its properties as an emmenagogue and antispasmodic herb.

Properties:

• Antispasmodic: Soothes muscle spasms, especially in cases of intestinal colic or severe cough.
• Antitussive: Reduces intense and persistent cough.
• Emmenagogue: Regulates the menstrual cycle and stimulates menstruation.

Usage: 1 tablespoon of crushed rue (or a pinch of uncrushed) is steeped with 1 glass of boiling water in a covered container. Let it sit for 10-15 minutes and strain before use. Ideal also for vegetarians and vegans.

Origin: Greece, Imathia Region (cultivated).

Storage: In a dark and cool place (5°C – 15°C).
