Chios Mastic is the natural resin exuded from the trunk and branches of the mastic tree, a shrub belonging to the genus Pistacia lentiscus. Its cultivation is exclusive to Southern Chios. In ancient Greece, mastic was used as chewing gum and for cleaning teeth. It was the first natural chewing gum of the ancient world and was used for freshening breath.
