The Lady and the Unicorn is part of a series of six tapestries designed in Paris and woven in Flanders around 1500 AD, during the period of the French Renaissance. The tapestries depict a lady flanked by a lion and a unicorn in different scenes.
The sixth tapestry is larger than the others and shows the lady standing in front of a tent with the inscription "To My Only Desire" (À Mon Seul Désir). Her maid stands to the right, holding an open chest, while the lady places the necklace she wears in the other tapestries.
To her left is a low bench with a dog on a decorative cushion. This tapestry is unique as the lady appears to be smiling, while the unicorn and the lion flank her holding banners. The tapestry has inspired many interpretations and discussions.
