‘Mind-bending fantasy’ - GRAZIA

Katabasis, noun, Ancient Greek. The story of a hero's descent to the underworld.

Grad student Alice Law has only ever had one goal: to become the brightest mind in the field of analytic magick. But the only person who can make her dream come true is dead and – inconveniently – in Hell. And Alice, along with her biggest rival Peter Murdoch, is going after him.

But Hell is not as the philosophers claim, its rules are upside-down, and if she’s going to get out of there alive, she and Peter will have to work together. That’s if they can agree on anything. Will they triumph, or kill each other trying?

2025’s most unexpected love story is going to be hell in the new novel by Sunday Times Number One Bestseller R.F. Kuang.

Review this product
  • Oh god, this will be a difficult review to write but I want to share my thoughts. As a fellow Greek this books began so extraordinary and unique! with a real academic perspective on the plot, two very promising rival characters, and a journey to Hell to retrieve their professor's soul. Doesn't this sounds unique? Oh yeah. So what made me want to dnf it from times to times or to keep reading like a mad woman? Honestly I don't know because this is the first roller-coaster book for me in terms of the plot not feelings.

There where times that I couldn't put it down or I was admiring the academic background of the author, the effort and the knowledge she put there, the very well executed references to Greek mythology and the depths of her writing.

And then there where times that I was suffering from info dumping, no plot, especially between the courts or after Peter left the story and I couldn't care less for the story.

I think I can sum up my review to this sentence:

[ the premise was there, the idea was cool, the author had the knowledge to support it BUT the execution was bad and not enjoyable from times to times. ]

Mind me, I already told you I am greek and I know greek mythology, religions, mathematics, our philosophers and Latin from my academic studies and from our culture. And I really really appreciated the efforts of the author to include all this knowledge into the book. It was astonishing! And I get why some fellow booklovers will not enjoy this book because if you don't have this knowledge you will have to Google every other page. No this book is not for "smart people". It simply IS a dark ACADEMIA book with academic research in it.

But I will say, that's when my entertainment stopped. I felt like I was reading an internal monolog in so many parts of the book. Like there was no plot at all. Also I will not mention the absence of the characters relationship, and I don't mean the romantic part at all. This felt like a heavy academic book with the twist of magic.

It is an incredible work, but it is marketed wrongly. This is no fantasy, no dark academia romantacy. This is not the book to pick up if you enjoy these genres. This book has a very specific audience that will love it and I am here for them!

So please pick it up considering some things first, not because it's famous.
