The double edition of the Ecclesiazusae by Spyros A. Evangelatos, in a unified edition, with editing-introduction by Kaiti Diamantaku.
The Ancient Drama Laboratory and Theater Studies Research of the Department of Theatrical Studies at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, in collaboration with KAPA Editions, bring to light, in a single volume, the two translation versions of Aristophanes' Ecclesiazusae, which were entrusted to us approximately thirty years apart by Spyros A. Evangelatos: the "translation-adaptation" of Ecclesiazusae, which supported the performance of the play in 1969 by the Experimental Stage of the Greek State Theatre of Northern Greece, and the "rendering" of Ecclesiazusae, which supported the play's performance in 1998 by the Amphitra Theater of S. A. Evangelatos.
This is a unique 'complete revival' in Greek of the same translator-director on the same work, revealing much about both his artistic unique voice— as a Renaissance director, theatrical playwright, translator, theatre scholar, university professor, full member, vice-president, and president of the Academy, founder and director of the Amphitra Theater, director of other artistic organizations—and the history, theory, and practice of translating and staging Ancient Comedy and Greek drama in general.
The two translations are published as part of the research project "Unpublished Translations of Ancient Drama: Identification – Documentation – Collection – Evaluation," under the overall scientific organization of Kaiti Diamantaku, professor at the Department of Theatrical Studies at EKPA and Director of the Ancient Drama and Theatre Research Laboratory, who curated the edition and wrote its preface with an extensive introduction.
Within the same research framework, three other historical translations have recently been published by KAPA Editions: Aeschylus' Oresteia in the translation-adaptation of Georgios Sotiropoulos, Euripides' Orestes in the translation of Giorgos Sevastikoglou, and Euripides' Troades in the translation of Kostis Kολoτας.
