Description

Norie’s Nautical Tables are an essential resource for anyone learning and practicing astronavigation. Since J W Norie published the first edition of his Complete Set of Nautical Tables and Epitome of Practical Navigation in 1803, many updates to the tables have been necessary, both in content and presentation. New tables have been added, obsolete ones removed to adapt to evolving navigation techniques, aiming to improve the accuracy of position calculations and reduce the tedium of the process.

Since the commissioning of the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS), its proven accuracy and reliability in all weather conditions have fostered confidence and near-unquestioning reliance on its ability to provide a vessel’s position, course, and speed. While its use is widespread, the marine environment is hostile, and electronic equipment or the system itself can fail. No cautious mariner would embark on an ocean voyage without a dependable navigational backup.

This book explains in detail, through step-by-step instructions and worked examples, various methods of performing navigational calculations using a scientific calculator and/or the tables. Several respected editors have contributed to Norie’s Nautical Tables over the years, and this edition includes contributions from François Hugo and updates to the Ports of the World section. It presents formulas in a format suitable for direct entry into a scientific calculator. Acknowledging that navigation can sometimes be performed without a calculator, logarithms have been retained.

• All the tables needed for coastal and deep-sea navigation are included
• A simple, consistent method of interpolation is used for all trigonometric tables
• Some tables and data are also provided that are not readily available onboard ships or are primarily used in examinations.
