Description

For centuries, the history of art has largely overlooked the achievements of women artists. In 2024, the Women Artists Museum of Mugen – or FAMM for short – is changing this imbalance in the recognition and appreciation of women’s art from around the world. Through paintings, sculptures, and photographs from the remarkable Levett Collection, FAMM is proud to tell the story of women’s creativity from Impressionism to the present day. Written by a diverse group of women curators, academics, and art historians, this exceptional book features over 200 stunning works of art from the FAMM and Levett Collection. The publication is complemented by a lively introduction and an illustrated timeline highlighting significant events related to women artists and some of the most important artistic movements and themes in visual arts from the mid-19th century. In the main part of the book, the showcased works are divided into six thematic sections representing an exciting artistic journey: from visionary Impressionists such as Berthe Morisot and Mary Cassatt, to bold Surrealists like Leonora Carrington, Leonor Fini, and Dorothea Tanning; to daring illustrations by Elaine de Kooning, Alice Neel, Jenny Saville, and Sahara Longa; and dynamic abstract works by Lee Krasner, Joan Mitchell, Helen Frankenthaler, Alma Thomas, and Lalan. The final two sections, dedicated to sculpture and contemporary art, include works by Barbara Hepworth, Louise Bourgeois, Sarah Lucas, Howardena Pindell, Tracey Emin, Marina Abramovic, and Stacey Gillian Abe, among others. Each section’s author contributes a brief introductory essay as well as extensive captions offering an engaging commentary on each selected artwork and the artist behind its creation. An authentic guide to an extraordinary collection, this is a true celebration of women in art – whether established innovators of the last 150 years or emerging stars. Pages: 272, Dimensions: 25x25cm
