Human domination of nature shapes every aspect of our lives today, even if it remains almost invisible to us. Since humans are part of nature, human dominance ultimately traps and exploits people—not only the poor and marginalized, but also the privileged and wealthy, even in the most prosperous societies around the world.

Although modern democracy sets limitations intended to protect people from domination as arbitrary exercise of power, it offers few such protections for the non-human parts of nature. As a result, regardless of where we stand in human hierarchies, we find ourselves both co-responsible for and entangled in a system that makes sustainable living almost impossible. It traps and exploits not only nature but also people in various ways.

In the book "Eco-Emancipation," Sharon Krause argues that we can find our way toward a better, freer life by limiting human authority over nature and promoting the well-being of nature alongside our own, thereby freeing the Earth from human dominance and ourselves from a way of life that is both exploitative and exploited, co-responsible and trapped.

Eco-emancipation requires new, more-than-human political communities that incorporate the non-human parts of nature through representative institutions and rights regimes, combining these new institutional arrangements with political activism, a public ethic of respect for nature, and a culture of ecological responsibility.
