Migrant workers in the West are at the forefront of the fragile situation that is beginning to dominate social and economic life in neoliberal societies. Despite the highly insecure and exploitative working conditions they commonly face, labor mobilizations by precarious workers are infrequent.

In this in-depth look at the daily realities of vulnerable migrant labor, Panos Theodoropoulos worked in Glasgow’s warehouses, factories, and kitchens to explore how precariousness is experienced and challenged. Connecting the fields of structure, subjectivity, and culture, his analysis demonstrates that precariousness not only influences workers’ working conditions but also socializes them into an individualistic, survival-focused struggle that weakens solidarity and perpetuates its own neoliberal logic.

However, importantly, precariousness and the broader neoliberal culture cannot erase workers’ material awareness and experience of class injustice. This suggests the potential to build strong connections and resistance methods, deeply rooted in the lives and communities of vulnerable workers.
