Description

Description

An important edition of Hokusai's exceptional final work, originally published to accompany the acclaimed retrospective exhibition at the British Museum and now available in a compact edition.

Hokusai (1760–1849) created magnificent works during the last thirty years of his life, until his death at nearly 90 years old. This book presents fresh studies of the paintings and prints the artist produced in his final three years, gathering the finest examples found in Japan and around the world.

Hokusai's personal beliefs are examined here through significant paintings, drawings, woodcuts, and illustrated books. This publication gives due attention to the contribution of his daughter, Eijo (Oi), a successful artist in her own right.

Hokusai continually explored the permanence and details of natural phenomena in his art. His late subjects and styles were based on a mastery of eclectic Japanese, Chinese, and European techniques and an encyclopedic knowledge of nature, myth, and history.

The collection of Hokusai's works draws from the finest examples found in Japan and worldwide, making this edition a uniquely valuable review of the artist's final career.
