The game Tianxia takes place during the Warring States period, around 260 BC, a pivotal time in Chinese history marked by ongoing wars and significant strategic reforms.

Players assume the roles of leaders of aristocratic families aiming to gain prestige and favorable relations with the powerful rulers of the seven warring states. The game lasts four rounds, during which governors are placed in regions and rival families' power is strengthened in order to win their favor.

Players also sell goods via trading ships sailing along the Chinese coasts, amassing wealth and other benefits. However, they must beware of nomadic warriors, who pose a constant threat along the northern borders of the seven states. Training soldiers and building walls and towers are essential to defend against invaders and safeguard their interests, while also gaining prestige.

Each round, the nomads advance toward the borders of the seven states, gathering more and more warriors. When they reach the borders, a battle is fought that affects all players. At the end of the game, the player who proves to be the best ruler, politician, merchant, and protector wins.
