The Second Battle of Sirte was a decisive naval confrontation in the Mediterranean and a vital moment in the struggle for Malta's survival. Malta was the key in the fiercely contested naval campaign taking place in the Mediterranean, a crucial link in the Axis supply lines between Italy and North Africa. Under ongoing bombing campaigns by the Axis, Malta depended on supply convoys to survive.
Axis air forces dominated the skies, making any relief attempt to the island extremely dangerous. In December 1941, a squadron from the east engaged in an inconclusive clash with the Italians in the First Battle of Sirte. By late March 1942, the situation escalated.
The decisive engagement took place on the afternoon of March 22nd, when British destroyers launched torpedoes against Italian ships. At dawn, Axis aircraft appeared and followed with a series of intense air attacks. Although three of the four ships in the squadron reached Malta, they were sunk days later.
Nevertheless, it was enough to give Malta the time needed to stay in the fight. This richly illustrated title by the renowned naval historian Angus Konstam highlights the importance of radar, intelligence, and air power, and above all, the resilience and courage faced with a superior enemy.
