Pictures & Frames
This unfinished portrait of a young woman with tousled hair (known as scapigliata) is mainly a brush sketch with some pigment. Its treatment resembles other incomplete works by the artist. The contrast between the shadowing of the hair and neck and the refined modeling of the face is intentional. It suggests that Leonardo was inspired by an ancient Roman writer, Pliny the Elder, who observed the technique of the great artist Apelles.
