Description

Despite appearances, that is, despite ideological prejudices about ideology and ideas, ideology does not exist within ideas. The “ideas” have, as the ideology of the idea tries to convince us, no innate, ideal, or spiritual existence; instead, they have a material existence. Ideology does not exist in the “world of ideas,” understood as the “spiritual world.” Ideology exists in institutions and in their practices. We are even tempted to say more specifically: Ideology exists in mechanisms and in their practices. It is precisely in this sense that the ideological mechanisms of the state realize, within the framework of the material arrangement of each of these mechanisms, and within their practices, an ideology external to them, which we have called primary ideology and which we can now identify by its name, state ideology, as the unity of the main ideological themes of the ruling class or classes. In the aftermath of May ’68, Louis Althusser produced some of his most influential and critical theoretical contributions: a framework for a materialist theory of ideology, on one hand, and the main outlines of a new Marxist theory of state power, centered on the ideological mechanisms of the state, on the other. In this edition, the entire research work of the author is compiled, primarily the fundamental text from which the fragments used in the famous article “Ideology and Ideological State Apparatuses” were drawn. It thus becomes accessible for the first time in Greek the full contribution of Althusser on ideology and ISAs, shedding light on previously opaque points that prompted critique, and perhaps bringing to the surface others that arise precisely from the researcher's incomplete and unfinished manuscript. This book therefore constitutes a decisive contribution to opening a path toward the domain of Marxist theory of the state and ideology, pushing us to transform its problematic through a materialist approach to reproduction (of capitalist relations of production), and consequently to the possibility of disruption and interruption. In a word, revolution.
