This bulbous plant has green, very narrow leaves, similar to those of onions. It blooms earlier than other bulbous plants, from January to May, with a flowering duration of 3-4 weeks. Its flowers are large, funnel-shaped, double, and yellow.

The bulbs are planted in autumn, at a depth about one and a half times their size, in light, fertile, well-drained, neutral or acidic soils, even in grass. It prefers sunny and semi-shaded locations and tolerates very low temperatures.

Overripe flowers are always removed, and the leaves are left for at least 6 weeks to allow better formation of the bulbs. They are cultivated in flower beds, rock gardens, and pots, and their flowers are also used as cut flowers. They propagate by dividing bulbils in autumn.
