“She opened the book to the dog-eared page and saw a sentence underlined. Underlining in an unsold book! Unacceptable! Outrageous! Someone had come in here, had ruined one of the books, and didn’t even have the decency to buy it!”

“Hazel would have kept fuming all day if the underlined phrase hadn’t caught her attention. It didn’t have any particular literary value. It was neither profound nor full of meaning. But it was as if the book or the person who had underlined that phrase was speaking directly to her.”

“‘Come with me, my girl, if you want to live an adventure.’ She almost dropped the book from her hands. She glanced quickly around, almost expecting to see someone standing there watching her and laughing. Surely it was a prank. But who had set it up? Who could possibly know what Hazel had been thinking all day? Of course, there was no one in the bookstore. It must have been a very strange coincidence.”

  • I liked it. I'll start with that as a statement.
Ok, I didn't find it unforgettable but overall it was a quiet story with a rather predictable plot, nice and with the right amount of spice, quite well-written, strong tropes. The small town romance, age gap. And of course a he falls first that was so very sweet. A story that flowed smoothly without particular tensions.

“I was prepared to read every book in your damn bookstore just to spend some time with you.” - Noah

The books in the bookstore where Hazel works start leaving her messages and she embarks on a little treasure hunt with help from the charming Noah. An agreement that, as it seems, will have an expiration date, but how easy is it when love gets in the way?

I would say it’s a cozy, snuggly autumn story if this book had done the one and only thing I ask from such seasonal books: to put me in the mood of the season.

However, this book, even though it has a very autumnal cover that suggests this vibe, actually offers a story that starts in the middle of summer with a boatman as the main character, so as you can understand, it doesn’t really help you get into the season or lose yourself in its nostalgic and cozy vibe.

The story was cute and okay, but that’s about it, and while at first there was some interest to see what would happen with the secret messages, somewhere along the way even that became uninteresting to me.
The characters were okay, nothing particularly intriguing, while the spice appeared very suddenly and I think it was a bit too much for the characters’ background.

Finally, something that bothered me quite a bit was the inside jokes of the group, which I felt I didn’t understand at all, let alone laugh at, but I take full responsibility for that because, as I understood, some characters appeared in the previous book, so maybe I needed a first introduction to them before I could understand the dialogues in this book.
Conclusion: never read a book from a series as a standalone, even if they tell you it’s okay!

I recommend it to those looking for a book to pass the time without much fuss
