What is 925 Sterling Silver?
The chemical element silver is a heavy, rare, soft metal with a bright metallic lustre.
The silver content of a piece of jewellery is usually measured in “degrees”, denoted by °. For example, 925° silver means 92.5 per cent (925 parts) pure silver and 7.5 per cent (75 parts) metal alloy.
But why don’t we use 100% silver in jewellery?
Pure silver is quite soft for use in jewellery, ornaments and other items, so we add other metals, usually copper, to make it suitable for jewellery. 925 is the right fineness to ensure your jewellery is durable over time and with wear.
All silver jewellery must be stamped with the “925” hallmark. It is usually found on the underside of a piece of jewellery, in very small numbers so as not to affect its appearance.
925 silver does not cause allergies like other metals. If someone is allergic to 925 silver, they are allergic to all metals and should only wear jewellery made of yellow or white gold.
Silver is a metal that will tarnish over time. This is completely normal and nothing to worry about—it proves that the piece is indeed silver. There are ways to slow down this process (platinum plating, gold plating and care tips), and we can easily restore your jewellery to its original colour.
