Ukraine, 1919. Europe is trying to stand upright after World War I and the allies send troops to counter the Bolshevik threat. It is the first large-scale armed response of the Western world against communism; and Greece is at the forefront.
Among the officers of the Greek expeditionary force is Panagiotis Gargalidis (the same person who, a few years later, will lead, along with Leonardopoulos, the 1923 counter-revolution). As commander of the infantry of the 2nd Division, he keeps a diary and records firsthand the battles of Odessa and Kherson, the difficulties of daily life, but also the tension of an operation that quickly collapsed under the contradictions and mistakes of the allies.
Gargalidis's account is not only a military chronicle. It is the living document of a pivotal moment in history, before the Asia Minor campaign and after the end of World War I, connecting Greek history with world history.
