After 7 years and 4 different Garmin models, I got tired of their increasingly elitist strategy on all levels and decided to switch camps. The reasons I preferred Amazfit over Suunto, which I had even earlier, were two: the even brighter (on paper) screen of the TR3pro and the NFC.
Aesthetically, it doesn’t drive me crazy, I find it excessively “loud,” even more so than the Garmin Fenix 7, so much so that it reminds me of watches from Temu. But we have a good amount of titanium in the bezel and buttons, the button feel is very good, it’s waterproof up to 100m, and the screen is covered by sapphire crystal, so essentially the watch is at the highest level.
The screen brightness is stated at 3000 nits, superior to the Garmin F8, equal to the Apple Watch Ultra 2, and only inferior to the Fenix 8 Super Amoled. There hasn’t been a single moment under the sun when the screen wasn’t clearly visible, but what impressed me is how well the auto brightness works; in dimly lit spaces, the screen is very discreet.
I’m a very slow, middle-aged runner, I run about 120km a month and 2-3 marathons a year following training programs previously from Garmin and now from Amazfit, and I wear the watch most days of the month (more on that below). I mention this to emphasize that I’m not even a serious amateur, but I am a statistics geek and try to make the most of my equipment. I consider Garmin the leader in the field and all these years I was used to doing things their way. Finally, and to avoid being long-winded, whatever I did with Garmin, I now do with Amazfit, although some workarounds were needed. For example:
- Amazfit does not have an Internet portal (unthinkable, but true), so you can’t view your workouts on a PC, which is important to me. I bought a subscription to Intervals.icu, and soon I’ll buy a Strava subscription—which I’ve delayed for too long.
- Designing a route on the phone screen (even on a tablet) doesn’t suit me at all, and since there’s no web-based portal, we can’t design a route on the PC. Another app is needed; I preferred the free OsmAnd. You create the route and easily transfer it to the watch.
- Garmin Pay took several years to become established in Greece, but once it did, it works flawlessly. Amazfit, of course, has no collaboration with any Greek bank, but you can create a Curve account, add any card you want, and thus pay with the watch. It works very easily and reliably.
All this shows me that Amazfit hasn’t reached Garmin’s overall, seamless experience, but it’s not far off, and you certainly don’t miss any feature; you just have to take one or two extra steps, which, once you get used to them, don’t feel like a big difference.
We’re not even discussing GPS accuracy—there’s nothing to comment on, it’s flawless. What impressed me is the accuracy of sleep tracking. Absolutely no comparison with Garmin; it captures naps, sleep start/end, and intermediate awakenings with incredible accuracy—unbelievable.
Overall, all the wellness measurements recorded in the Zepp app seem more “logical” to me than Garmin’s. Here too, all the measurements are consistent (as they were with Garmin), but for example... I can't be sleeping for 7 hours, waking up on my own and feeling rested, and Garmin gives me a sleep score of 50/100, while Amazfit's 78/100 seems more reasonable. Otherwise, my other biometrics (HRV, VO2 max, etc.) are more or less the same as Garmin's and, mainly, consistent.
The last problem I found and don't see being fixed: I listen to music from my phone with my Bluetooth headphones connected to it. When this happens, training-related notifications (distance, pace, heart rate, training phase) are not heard through the headphones, but from the watch's speaker. So, multipair headphones are needed, but even those don't work guaranteed. So I bought the Amazfit Up, which are also open ear, so that solved it too.
Quite often I wear "regular" watches, so the TR3 pro stays in the box. So as not to lose my wellness measurements, I also bought the Amazfit Helio strap, which is a simple fitness tracker that discreetly records everything the watch does.
Its battery has nothing to do with its nominal duration; in practice it lasts 11-12 days with AOD always on, always connected to the phone, and 4-5 hours of GPS workouts per week.
The TR3 pro is not cheap at €400. But it can't be compared to the lifestyle smartwatches from Huawei, Samsung, etc.; it belongs to the sportswatch category along with Garmin, Suunto, Coros, and Polar and does an excellent job. I had reservations about leaving the tough embrace of Garmin, but in the end it went much better than I expected.
Μετά από 7 χρόνια και 4 διαφορετικά μοντέλα Garmin κουράστηκα με την ολοένα και πιο ελιτίστικη στρατηγική της σε όλα τα επίπεδα και αποφάσισα να αλλάξω στρατόπεδο. Οι λόγοι που προτίμησα την Amazfit σε σχέση με την Suunto που είχα ακόμη παλιότερα ήταν δύο, η ακόμη φωτεινότερη (στα χαρτιά) οθόνη του TR3pro και το NFC.
Εμφανισιακά δεν με τρελαίνει τελείως, το βρίσκω υπερβολικά "φωνακλάδικο", πιο πολύ και από το Garmin Fenix 7, τόσο που θυμίζει ρολόγια από Temu. Αλλά έχουμε αρκετή ποσότητα τιτανίου στη στεφάνη και στα κουμπιά, η αίσθηση των κουμπιών είναι πολύ καλή, είναι αδιάβροχο στα 100μ. και η οθόνη καλύπτεται από κρύσταλλο σαπφείρου, οπότε επί της ουσίας το ρολόι είναι στο υψηλότερο επίπεδο.
Η φωτεινότητα της οθόνης αναφέρεται στα 3000 knits, ανώτερη των Garmin F8, ισάξια των Apple watch ultra 2 και κατώτερη μόνο του Fenix 8 Super Amoled. Δεν έχει υπάρξει ούτε στιγμή κάτω από τον ήλιο που η οθόνη να μη φαίνεται καθαρά, αλλά αυτό που με εντυπωσίασε είναι ο πολύ σωστός τρόπος που δουλεύει το auto brightness, σε υποφωτισμένους χώρους η οθόνη είναι πολύ διακριτική.
Είμαι πολύ αργός, μεσήλικας δρομέας, τρέχω περίπου 120χλμ. το μήνα και 2-3 μαραθωνίους τον χρόνο ακολουθώντας προπονητικά πρόγράμματα εκπονημένα από την Garmin παλιότερα και την Amazfit τώρα, και φοράω το ρολόι τις περισσότερες ημέρες του μήνα (περισσότερα για αυτό παρακάτω). Αυτά τα λέω για να υπογραμμίσω ότι δεν είμαι καν σοβαρός ερασιτέχνης, αλλά είμαι statistics geek και προσπαθώ να αξιοποιώ όσο γίνεται τον εξοπλισμό μου. Θεωρώ την Garmin την κορυφαία του χώρου και όλα αυτά τα χρόνια είχα συνηθίσει να κάνω τα πράγματα με το δικό της τρόπο. Τελικά και για να μη μακρυγορώ, ό,τι έκανα με τα Garmin, το κάνω τώρα και με την Amazfit, αν και χρειάστηκαν κάποιες παρακαμπτήριες. Πχ
- Η Amazfit δεν έχει portal στο Internet (αδιανόητο, αλλά πραγματικό), οπότε δεν μπορείς να δεις τις προπονήσεις σου σε PC, κάτι σημαντικό για εμένα. Αγόρασα συνδρομή στο Intervals.icu, ενώ σύντομα θα αγοράσω συνδρομή στο Strava-και πολύ το καθυστέρησα.
- Ο σχεδιασμός διαδρομής στην οθόνη του κινητού (ακόμη και tablet) δεν με βολεύει καθόλου, και εφόσον δεν έχουμε web based portal, δεν μπορούμε να σχεδιάσουμε διαδρομή στο PC. Χρειάζεται άλλη εφαρμογή, προτίμησα την δωρεάν OsmAnd. Φτιάχνεις τη διαδρομή και την περνάς εύκολα στο ρολόι.
- Το Garmin Pay χρειάστηκε αρκετά χρόνια για να εδραιωθεί στην Ελλάδα, αλλά από τη στιγμή που αυτό έγινε, δουλεύει απροβλημάτιστα. Η Amazfit φυσικά δεν έχει καμία συνεργασία με καμία ελληνική τράπεζα, αλλά μπορείς να φτιάξεις ένα λογαριασμό Curve, να περάσεις εκεί οποιαδήποτε κάρτα θέλεις και έτσι να πληρώνεις με το ρολόι. Δουλεύει πολύ εύκολα και αξιόπιστα.
Όλα αυτά για εμένα δείχνουν ότι η Amazfit δεν έχει φτάσει την Garmin στη συνολική, ομαλή εμπειρία, αλλά δεν απέχει πολύ και σίγουρα δεν μένεις χωρίς κάποιο χαρακτηριστικό, απλά πρέπει να κάνεις μια-δυο επιπλέον κινήσεις που, μόλις τις συνηθίσεις, δεν νιώθεις και μεγάλες διαφορές.
Δεν συζητάμε για ακρίβεια GPS, δεν υπάρχει κάτι να σχολιάσω, άψογο. Αυτό που με εντυπωσίασε είναι η ακρίβεια στην καταγραφή ύπνου. Καμία απολύτως σχέση με την Garmin, πιάνει με τρομερή ακρίβεια τα naps, την έναρξη/λήξη του ύπνου και τα ενδιάμεσα ξυπνήματα, απίστευτο.
Συνολικά όλες οι μετρήσεις wellness που καταγράφονται στο Zepp app μου φαίνονται πιο "λογικές" από της Garmin. Και εδώ όλες οι μετρήσεις είναι συνεπείς (όπως ήταν και στην Garmin), αλλά πχ. δεν μπορεί να κοιμάμαι 7 ώρες, να ξυπνάω μόνος μου και ξεκούραστος και η Garmin να μου δίνει sleep score 50/100, το 78/100 της Amazfit μου φαίνεται πιο λογικό. Κατά τα άλλα τα υπόλοιπα βιομετρικά μου (HRV, VO2 max κτλ) πάνω κάτω είναι ίδια με της Garmin και, κυρίως, συνεπή.
Το τελευταίο πρόβλημα που εντόπισα και δεν το βλέπω να διορθώνεται: Ακούω μουσική από το κινητό μου με τα bluetooth ακουστικά μου συνδεδεμένα σε αυτό. Όταν συμβαίνει αυτό, οι ειδοποιήσεις οι σχετικές με την προπόνηση (χιλιόμετρα, ρυθμός, παλμοί, φάση προπόνησης), δεν ακούγονται από τα ακουστικά, αλλά από το ηχείο του ρολογιού. Χρειάζονται λοιπόν multipair ακουστικά, αλλά ούτε αυτά δουλεύουν εγγυημένα. Αγόρασα λοιπόν τα Amazfit Up, τα οποία είναι και open ear, οπότε λύθηκε και αυτό.
Αρκετά συχνά φοράω "κανονικά" ρολόγια, οπότε το TR3 pro μένει στο κουτί. Για να μη χάνω τις μετρήσεις wellness, αγόρασα και το Amazfit Helio strap, το οποίο είναι ένα απλό fitness tracker που καταγράφει διακριτικά ό,τι και το ρολόι.
Η μπαταρία του δεν έχει καμία σχέση με τον ονομαστική διάρκειά της, στην πράξη αντέχει 11-12 ημέρες με το AOD πάντα on, συνδεδεμένο πάντα με το κινητό και 4-5 ώρες GPS προπονήσεις την εβδομάδα.
Το TR3 pro δεν είναι φτηνό στα €400. Αλλά δεν συγκρίνεται με τα lifestyle smartwatches των Huawei, Samsung κτλ, ανήκει στην κατηγορία των sportswatches μαζί με τα Garmin, Suunto, Coros και Polar και τα καταφέρνει εξαιρετικά. Εϊχα ενδοιασμούς να φύγω από τη σκληρή αγκαλια της Garmin, αλλά τελικά πήγε πολύ πιο καλά από όσο περίμενα.
