The tangram is a puzzle consisting of 7 flat shapes, called tans, which are combined to form shapes. The player's goal is to create a specific shape (for which only an outline or silhouette is given) using all 7 pieces, without overlapping them.
It is rumored that the tangram was invented in China during the Song dynasty (960-1279 AD) and later brought to Europe by trading ships in the early 19th century. It became very popular in Europe for a period and again during World War I. It is one of the most popular puzzles in the world.
A Chinese psychologist notably described the tangram as "the shortest psychological test in the world," although anyone who engages with it does so for entertainment rather than psychological analysis.
