Board Game Go (gο) is a board game of battle and strategy for 2 players from China, but it became widely known in Japan.
In the game, inspiration, agility, combinations, tactics, and the ability to plan play a key role. Advantages of the game include the constant switching between attack and defense, the impossibility to play for a draw, and the ability to balance the players' strengths by offering the weaker player some extra stones.
Go originated in China (known as weiqi). The two players, black and white, alternately place stones on the goban (board), surrounding territory, capturing their opponent's stones, and protecting their own stones. It is mainly played in East Asia (China, Japan, Korea, etc.), and through the Internet in the rest of the world.
The name “Go” comes from Japan, where it is also known as Igo or Wigo. The Chinese name weiqi translates as “board game of encirclement” or as “chess of encirclement”. In Korea, it is known as baduk.
The rules of go are very simple, but the strategy used by the players is complex and is considered to surpass other games, such as chess, in depth. Go champions never stop refining their strategy. In the past, go was compared to war. Strategies from Chinese Art of War are sometimes used in go. Like wars, go ends when both players agree there are no more meaningful moves. The final score consists of the territory controlled by each player and the number of stones they have managed to capture.
