A Chinese board game of strategy and tactics for 3 to 4 players.
Players try to collect sets of three or four different types of tiles, some of which are worth more points than others, and each player tries to be the first to complete a winning hand by declaring mahjong.
Mahjong has many regional variations, from the dominant Chinese wind system to American mahjong, which uses special bingo-like cards.
The basic game is played with 4 players, but there are also 3-player variations. It has 136 tiles, including 36 characters, 36 bamboo and 36 circles, which are the suits. These are divided into four sets numbered 1 to 9 in each suit. There are also 16 wind tiles and 12 dragon (honor) tiles. The set also includes 8 bonus tiles: 4 flowers and 4 seasons, though these are not required for the basic game. One pair of dice is used at the beginning to set up the game, and some variations use 2 pairs of dice.
