Board game of Chinese strategy and tactics for 3 to 4 players. Players attempt to collect sets of three or four different kinds of tiles, some of which score higher points than others, and each tries to be the first to complete a winning hand by making mahjong.
Mahjong has many regional variations, from the dominant Chinese wind system to American mahjong, which features special cards similar to bingo. The main game is played with 4 players, but there are also 3-player variations. It has 136 tiles, including 36 characters, 36 bamboo, and 36 circles, which are the suits. These, in turn, are divided into four sets of numbers from 1 to 9 in each suit.
There are also 16 wind tiles and 12 dragon (honor) tiles. In addition, 8 bonus tiles are included, with 4 flowers and 4 seasons, but these are not necessary in the basic game. A pair of dice is used at the beginning for game setup, and in some variations, 2 pairs of dice are used.
