This tea comes from a tea tree that has strong buds appearing early in spring, thick shoots, and fleshy soft leaves. It has a sweet taste with earthy tones and a reddish infusion. Its flavor might surprise new consumers. The Yunnan province is considered the birthplace of the tea tree, with 260 out of the 320 varieties found there, including centuries-old trees. For example, near the border with Burma, there is a giant tea tree that has been growing since the fourth century, standing 32 meters tall with a trunk diameter greater than one meter. Archaeological evidence from the Dai ethnic group shows that the eponymous tea has been produced in Yunnan province for 1700 years.
