The new novel by Thomas Pynchon
Milwaukee, 1932, the Great Depression is in full swing, Prohibition is about to end, Al Capone is in prison, and private investigations are shifting from employer-employee relations to more domestic matters. Hicks McTaggart, a former strikebreaker turned private detective, believes he is safe in his job until he's sent on a case that should be routine, locating and returning the heiress of a Wisconsin cheesemaking estate who has decided to wander.
Before he knows it, he is swept onto an international ship and eventually ends up in Hungary, where there is no coastline, a language from another planet, and enough pastry shops to ensure that any police officer can retire – and of course, without a trace of the fugitive heiress he must pursue.
Until he gets close to her, he will find himself entangled with Nazis, Soviet agents, British spies, swing musicians, paranormal professionals, outlaw motorcyclists, and the problems that arise from each of them, none of which are within Hicks's capabilities, forgetting to mention the fee.
