Description

Fully Updated Edition Covering International Events of the Last 10 Years

Everything you want to know about the global political scene in 15+ maps.

The iconic BESTSELLER, now fully updated with brand new content AND NEW MAPS REFLECTING the changing global geopolitical landscape since its first publication in 2015.

Prisoners of Geography is the book the world needs to understand what is happening in the news today, from China's ambitions to the conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza. Geopolitics expert Tim Marshall examines the past, present, and future to provide crucial insights into one of the main factors shaping world history—because if you don't know geography, you'll never have the full picture.

This edition supplements the classic text with the events and trends of the past decade, featuring new material that includes:

  • the Russia-Ukraine war and Moscow's alliances with authoritarian states,
  • the conflicts in the Middle East,
  • the growing military and strategic power of China and its stance towards Taiwan,
  • the global power of America and its pivot to the Pacific,
  • Europe's trend towards more extreme politics, increased defense spending, and the new "Iron Curtain",
  • the remilitarization and increasing power of Japan,
  • the great powers' game in Africa,
  • the development of India's economic and military power.

They said about the book

"One of the best books on geopolitics you could imagine." Evening Standard

"Incisive insights into how geography shapes the choices of global leaders." Gideon Rachman, Financial Times

"In an era of pandemics, wars, and crises, Prisoners of Geography is the most accessible and useful guide for navigating a turbulent world." Pavlos Tsimas

"Marshall is not afraid to ask tough questions and give sharp answers." Newsweek

"... incredibly informative and revealing." LoveReading

The book inspired me to read, the well-known Facebook group (05.2021) "Geography is very cool". It was definitely worth it.

The book is written by a British journalist who has reported (among other things, including wars) from various regions of the world and has his own perspective.

Basically, what it deals with is the correlation between history and geography - geomorphology. That is, how the morphology of the land (mountains, rivers, jungle, deserts) has influenced over time the relationships between neighboring (mainly) countries, as well as the major global powers.
Example: the only accessible point to the interior of Russia is Poland, and from there it has faced several invasions in the last 500 years. It has never been conquered from any other direction!

It is divided into 10 sections: Russia, China, United States, Europe, Africa, Middle East, India and Pakistan, Korea and Japan, Latin America, Arctic.

It is a journey through (almost) the whole world, and by the end, you will have a better understanding of the past and the future.

If I had to find something negative, it would be that sometimes the translation of the text is perhaps too complex (long sentences that make it difficult to understand) and the fact that the images at the beginning of each chapter are not the best (black and white and with different orientations, sometimes horizontal, sometimes vertical).
Also, it does not include the region of Australia - New Zealand.

Overall, 10/10.

After this (or even before), another book worth reading about geopolitics is "The Grand Chessboard" by Brzezinski. America's view of the world.

The book talks about geography and has only 3-4 maps in total... it could have been much more interesting if the reader could simultaneously see the maps corresponding to each text.

Very good book, it helps you understand the geopolitical events of our time, with a historical overview for each country without overwhelming you. It is the appropriate book for anyone interested in geopolitical issues and is a beginner.

One of the most interesting books I have read recently, as it combines geography and history in one. It helped me solve questions I had about the expansion of countries over time, conflicts between countries, the logic behind strange alliances, etc. Obviously, it does not include the most recent events, such as Russia's invasion of Ukraine, but the logic behind it is already covered in a relevant chapter of the book.

I highly recommend it to those who read history and geography books.

Detailed and argumentative is the structure of the author with many things he writes as dangers that may have occurred in the year 2023 AD. I recommend it because afterwards you can understand how complex and international the political chessboard of the major powers is.

    AMAZING BOOK!!!
It made me understand why certain things happen that seemed illogical to me before. The truth is, in order to read it, it would be good to have open maps in front of you (although the author provides them for each chapter he deals with), but it's a bit annoying to keep flipping pages. I have a computer open with the maps on one side and I read the book on the other.

P.S. It teaches you Geography. Really, until I opened this book, I had never noticed that Russia covers the whole of Europe and Asia in such a way, as well as many other things.
P.P.S. You get an idea of geopolitics.
P.P.P.S. This particular book does not deal extensively with Greek-Turkish relations, it just makes a simple reference. Don't expect a detailed analysis.

Very detailed and informative book about geopolitics that explains what the title suggests, which is how states are captives of geography, how they try to overcome the obstacles imposed on them, and the benefits it gives them. It analyzes the geography of all major countries and many "small" ones, leaving no region out. Specifically for Greece, it does not dedicate many pages and does not mention anything special, which is perhaps logical. It is good to have a map open while reading it to see exactly what is described in the book. The only thing that slightly bothered me is its Western perspective, sometimes idealizing the democracy of the West, but this is a minor detail.

The book inspired me to read, the well-known Facebook group (05.2021) "Geography is very cool". It was definitely worth it.

I am not an expert in geopolitics. This book gave me a very good understanding of the state of the world today. It is easy to read. I highly recommend it!

Excellent book that analyzes in depth the geopolitics of the whole world, divided by regions, and at various important moments in human history! This particular one, having read the English edition, I bought it as a gift, and it was duly appreciated!

  • Very good book, it helps you understand the geopolitical events of our time, with a historical overview for each country without overwhelming you. It is the appropriate book for anyone interested in geopolitical issues and is a beginner.

  • One of the most interesting books I have read recently, as it combines geography and history in one.

  • Detailed and argumentative is the structure of the author with many things he writes as dangers that may have occurred in the year 2023 AD. I recommend it because afterwards you can understand how complex and international the political chessboard of the major powers is.

  • For a start, it is excellent.
It is not a doctrine as it states, but there are serious factors that affect what is happening and we tend to ignore them
