Description

How is the credibility of a country rebuilt when it has reached the edge of the abyss?

Alexis Patelis, Head of the Prime Minister's Economic Office (2019-2024), narrates from the inside the "great comeback" of Greece: from capital controls and international doubt, just a breath away from global ostracism, to the recovery of investment grade. With scenes behind closed doors in London, New York, and Davos, he captures the backstage of a journey that made us proud of Greece abroad once again.

Amid the pandemic, international turbulence, and natural disasters, we witness the gradual transformation of the country's image from international pariah to reliable investment destination. A book about the ideas, the people, the rights and wrongs that shaped a historic five-year period; and a testimony to how markets are convinced through steady consistency.

Without embellishment, but with the conviction that "Greece can," this is the gripping perspective of a technocrat who lived through historic events from the inside—and answers the question posed by the international press: "How did you do it?"

What they said about the book:

I am certain that the book will become one of the components of our country's modern economic history – Yannis Stournaras

A juicy, fascinating narrative that feels like a movie – Aris Dimokidis

Why Read It:

  • The personal account of a unique journey: from the crisis and capital controls to the regaining of investment grade and the international restoration of Greece’s credibility.
  • The perspective of a person at the center of developments, with personal experience and access to behind-the-scenes events, written like an action adventure.
  • A book that combines current affairs with history, shedding light at the same time on how the economy and markets work and showing, beyond the grandiloquent claims, how a country can truly earn the trust of the international community.

Easy to read. I better understood what we experienced from 2019-2025 and the aftermath of previous years. I found it so interesting that I read it in 3-4 days. I really liked Alexis Patelis' writing style. I recommend the book to every citizen of the country so they can see the multitude and variety of problems that arose in addition to the existing ones and how they were dealt with. How a country reduced the public debt to GDP ratio from 205% to 154% in 5 years. How the country withstood external risks and how it anticipated and neutralized internal threats that would have paralyzed the country once again. And in general, how in these 5 years something happened, and for something to keep happening, small and steady steps are needed, because unfortunately there are no simple solutions to complex problems.

Very informative, pleasantly readable, it shows the great effort that was made for the country to reach such remarkable levels today. It can also be used as a reminder of WHAT WE SHOULD NOT DO in order not to relive bad moments!
