Malifaux is a world of danger, wonder, and ambition. Connected to Earth through a dimensional rift called the Great Rift, it is a place where magic flourishes, while lost technologies and hidden secrets await discovery. For those brave enough to cross the threshold, the place offers opportunities beyond imagination, but the cost is high and few emerge unchanged.
Humankind discovered Malifaux when the Great Rift opened in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Those who entered found themselves in a desolate landscape, but within it lay treasures. Constructions, relics, and tomes of magic quickly transformed humanity and Earth forever. Wizards delved into necromancy, driven to madness by voices urging them to push the limits of death magic. The fading magic of Earth was strengthened by Soulstones: beautiful gems mined from deep underground, capable of storing vast amounts of energy. Industry developed. Then, everything collapsed.
Malifaux is a skirmish miniature game set in a horror/steampunk environment. Each player creates a force of 5-7 figures from a faction to compete. A force consists of servants and at least one master. Malifaux involves resource management elements, as players use card decks instead of dice to resolve skill checks. Each check involves drawing a card from a deck and adding it to a figure's statistical roll. Players can choose cards from their hand to increase the value. The highest value wins over the opponent's check. Turn systems are unified, with each player alternating turns between model activations.
Malifaux uses cards, not dice, and the beautifully illustrated deck is called the FATE DECK. This deck is 100% plastic with Malifaux symbols. Two FATE DECKs are required to play the game, one for each player.
