Description

The Greeks are among the peoples of the planet who established their political independence through revolution. Initially fewer in number, but soon the majority, Greek women and men, relying on their own strength, overthrew Ottoman rule in their historic places, while simultaneously building their political freedom and independence.

1821 is a purely revolutionary event, in the scientific sense of the word, a comprehensive act of historical and political creation, through which the struggling Greeks transformed from subjects into citizens of their national state. Based on extensive archival research, this book analyzes the historical dynamics leading to the Revolution, the revolutionary war and its political significance, the establishment of political freedom, equality, and people's sovereignty, the ideological components of the Struggle, the social composition of the leadership and the fighters, the strategy followed by the Greek leaders towards the European powers, and, conversely, the systematic response of the Ottoman state and the Greek reactions.

This is a revolution with mass popular participation that strongly reflected its ideological and geopolitical significance throughout Europe and the Mediterranean. Inserted excerpts from contemporary texts allow the reader to better grasp the spirit of the fighters, both ordinary and leaders.

The book offers an academic historical perspective that aims to contribute to the rational and critical historical consciousness of today's Greek women and men citizens.

So, let us follow the events of 1821.
