This is irrational
It’s all in your mind
You imagine things
Don’t be paranoid
Just kidding!
I didn’t say that!
You’re exaggerating
If you act like this, I can’t talk to you
When words are not just simple conversations, but tools of doubt. When your reality is distorted in someone else’s hands. When you start wondering... maybe it’s your fault.
Gaslighting is a sneaky form of emotional manipulation. The person who practices it – consciously or unconsciously – systematically undermines the other’s perceptions, memories, and beliefs. The goal? To make them question their own logic, feel inadequate, vulnerable, “crazy.” And ultimately, it doesn’t just try to convince them they are losing their mind – it actually makes them lose it.
The term gaslighting was popularized by the 1944 film Gaslight, where a man gradually dims the gaslights and convinces his wife that nothing has changed – until she starts doubting her own perception.
