A selection of the main works from the foundational book of the Orthodox Church, in a new historical translation.
"Eat the bread of knowledge of wisdom found in this book and drink the wine that gladdens the heart." The Philokalia is the most influential book in the recent history of the Orthodox Church, aside from the Bible. It is a collection of thirty-six spiritual texts written from the 4th to the 15th century by teachers of Eastern Orthodox Christianity, following an ongoing tradition of prayer of the heart, or hesychasm, from Evagrius Ponticus to Gregory Palamas.
First published in Greek in 1782, and revered for its rich tapestry of wisdom that guides the path to union with God, the texts, primarily of monastic origin, serve as a guide for seeking contemplative prayer, "inner practice," and purity of the soul.
Translated by Jonathan L. Zecher and Andrew Louth, with an introduction by Andrew Louth and Jonathan L. Zecher.
