by Simon Stevens is a significant new adaptation of Anton Chekhov's timeless masterpiece, "Uncle Vanya." This edition invites the contemporary audience to (re)read Chekhov in the 21st century, exploring the enduring appeal of his characters, their existential dilemmas, and the human nature filled with humor and vitality.

Stevens delves into the Chekhovian text, selecting moments where the characters' dialogues fully reflect their perceptions of themselves and the world. He then composes a dramatic score where their thoughts and feelings alternate at an admirable pace, shaped by their personalities and the environment in which they live.

Stevens' adaptation preserves the core themes of the work – boredom, unfulfilled desires, and the desperate search for meaning and connection – while introducing an innovative theatrical approach. A key innovation is the theatrical clarification that all roles can be performed by a single actor, thereby opening a remarkable dialogue between the Chekhovian universe and contemporary acting techniques.

The individual transforms into a multifaceted being, full of contradictions, interpreted by a body beyond gender boundaries. Who is the protagonist in Stevens' "Vanya"? Perhaps it is the same as in the original Chekhov work: the human being. Flawed and shapeless, constantly transformed by his many faces and masks, fascinating in his contradictions.

Stevens' new version of Chekhov's "Vanya" received the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Revival (2024). In Greece, it is translated for the first time by Danai Loukaki and is staged by George Karamihos at the "Ypogeio" of the National Theatre of Greece.
