    Excellent. First time I read Kalpouzos and I was impressed by the story and the writing style. The only downside was that the book I got had the interpretation of the unknown, mainly Turkish, words at the very back and I had to refer often to the last pages.

Learning from each other in school, playful pranks on their lifelong sworn enemy Fasganos, the twin Jews Yosef and Menachem, the love that will have an unexpected evolution for both friends, the figures of their two mothers, the cosmopolitan Anastasia, dance parties, Café Aman, stone wars, Ramadan, hammam, Turkish Karagiozis, prostitution, excommunications, peasants, landowners, tough guys of the time, nationalism and intolerance, wealth and destitution, sweet and bitter life. Everything has its place in God's imaret, as Grandpa Ismail, the wise man, humanist, and chief of the heroes' dance, remarks, condemning with a sarcastic tone human vanity and petty behaviors. In the shadow of the clock striking Ottoman hours, Greeks, Ottomans, and Jews manage to coexist, dream, hope, fall in love, and develop solid friendships.

The castle clock – the oldest mechanical clock with a dial in the vast Ottoman Empire – struck the second hour of the night. The sound of its bell rang like a sweet melody in the ears of Liontos Thersites. He had already left behind the successive ridges, dismounted on the downhill cobblestone path near the ruins of the old watermill, and, mounting his mare again, trotted lightly across the flat area. With all his senses alert, he turned his gaze towards Arta, but the towering olive trees hid the few lights of the city. Only the moon lavishly scattered its light, as if to support him or to soothe the wounds of this tormented land.
