Illuminism is an inner path of "divine wisdom" aimed at the pursuit of Truth through the shared reading of Nature and Sacred texts. It offers a unique perspective on Christian writings, viewed through the lens of Neoplatonism and esoteric sciences, emphasizing the inner dimension of mystical quest and rejecting dogmatism.
It seeks to reconcile the philosophy of ancient classics with medieval theology. Its origins can be traced to interpretations where the term is used to describe various and peculiar inner practices. Often, it is confused or misidentified with the ideology and teachings of the Enlightened, which makes it difficult even today to fully distinguish between its ambiguous uses in esotericism, philosophy, and literature.
Illuminism confronted the condemnations of mysticism by the Church, as well as the changing attitude of 18th-century academic scholars. Ultimately, it "touched" all of Europe and spread to the Anglo-Saxon world. Its diverse and multi-layered activity significantly contributed to the societal need to free itself from the absolutism of the Church, in order to achieve the desired religious freedom.
This is the era when Europe will experience the flourishing of Illuminism as it moves away from the Church, but also from the secular state itself.
