The Lockheed F-104 Starfighter is an American supersonic interceptor and fighter-bomber. The F-104 originated from the experience of the Korean War, where most air victories were achieved with fast attacks. Thus, the new USAAF fighter was designed for speed and a high rate of climb. Additionally, it reflects the concept of the "missile-airplane with one man in the cockpit," which was also applied in other air forces in the second half of the 1950s and the early 1960s.
The flight of the prototype, designed by Clarence "Kelly" Johnson, took place on February 7, 1954, and entry into operational units began in 1958. The serial aircraft was powered by a General Electric J79 turbojet engine, featuring thin, trapezoidal wings and an R21G/H radar. The F-104 was produced in various versions, with the basic model being the F-104A.
