Description

In the book titled "A Brief History of the Church in Greece," we describe the history of the Church in Greece with the revolution of 1821 as the central axis and turning point, which marked the beginning of a series of events leading to the establishment of the Autocephalous Church of Greece. After a brief review of the most important milestones in the ecclesiastical history of the Greek territory, we describe the ecclesiastical conditions of the pre-revolutionary period, the period of Ottoman rule, the living conditions of the Orthodox, and the liberation efforts.

We then refer to the conditions that prevailed after the revolution of 1821, the ecclesiastical problems that arose, and their initial handling by the provisional governments and the Kapodistrias government. The significant changes in ecclesiastical institutions following the establishment of King Otto's reign, with the unilateral declaration of the Autocephaly of the Church of Greece in 1833, led by Theoklitos Pharmakidis, are presented next.

The unilateral declaration of Autocephaly sparked reactions, mainly expressed by Konstantinos Oikonomos of the Oikonomoi family. The official declaration of the Autocephaly of the Church of Greece according to the sacred canons, by the Ecumenical Patriarchate, took place in 1850 with the Patriarchal and Synodal Tome of 1850. We discuss the annexation of regions to the Greek state and the corresponding arrangement of ecclesiastical administration. The lives of the primates of the Church of Greece and the most important ecclesiastical events of the 19th and 20th centuries are described, shaped within the framework of the relations between the Church and the State.
