In the novel "The Convict," Theotokis describes the passionate love and its consequences, a passion that ends in tragedy. The story revolves around three men and a woman, who is the apple of discord and the cause of the evil that follows as a natural consequence of the passionate love.
"The Convict" – the title has symbolic meaning – is a novel flooded with passions and guilt, secrets and malice, stubbornness and egoism, jealousy and a longing for revenge. Theotokis, trying to interpret human actions, attributes them to love and the passion that accompanies it.
The novel refers to the way of life of Tourkogiannos, a rare stance indeed, who is filled with feelings of love and sympathy for all, enemies and friends alike, a love that possibly stems from God or from his moral constitution. The hero himself, who pays dearly – and unjustly – for the actions and sins of others, moved by a rare compassion and solidarity for his fellow human beings, publicly expresses his belief: "For in this world, happy are only those who always do good, or those who, when they do evil, repent!"
