Throughout history, there has been a diagonal route across the Peloponnese from Corinth through Argos and the central Arcadian plateau (in antiquity and the medieval period via Tegea; during the Ottoman era and onwards from Tripolitsa, present-day Tripoli), leading to Messinia (with a branch towards Laconia - Mystras).
