"Hole bent down and took the bottle. The weight of the liquid reminded him how thirsty he was, how much he needed sleep. Bjarnet, still wearing his uniform, looked at him in a way that was half fear and half sympathy. Hole twisted the cap, found himself holding a plastic black hole filled with cheap liquid, touched his lips. Another sound. The sound of liquid, the sound falling down the throat. A sound that should be forbidden. Maybe. "Nothing," said Bjarnet. "Connection problems." Hole ignored him, took another strong sip. What is "nothing" on the scale of death?

The call came shortly after three in the morning. This is the Wolf Hour, the hour when your heart beats slower, the hour when your nightmares come out into the world, the hour when people die. Hole lifted the receiver with one hand. He didn’t need to look at the clock. He knew. "This is Hole," he said. "What is it?" "A corpse, Harry. A woman, found in the forest. Wild. Very wild."
