Neoliberalism is the dominant ideology of our time, subordinating democracy to the power of money. The authors show how a group of elites, in order to safeguard their wealth and power, adopted a marginal philosophy from the 1930s that claimed unfettered competition is the defining characteristic of humanity. Think tanks, universities, mass media, and politicians took up arms to promote the idea that we are consumers, not citizens. And they seem to have succeeded.
The disastrous consequences of neoliberalism include the various forms of crisis that, while seemingly unrelated, have been exacerbated by the "invisible doctrine" and continue to be interlinked. It’s not just global warming and environmental destruction, extreme inequality and growing poverty, the collapse of public services and the fascist drift of society; it’s also all the diseases of despair that suffocate meaning and hope.
Journalist George Monbiot and filmmaker Peter Hutchison highlight the ominous reality of our lives and propose a new politics based on assertive participation and effective coexistence.
"A fantastic book."
Mark Ruffalo
"A penetrating, enlightening, and relentless anatomy of the great ideological beast haunting our age—a creature we so often whisper about without ever having seen it clearly."
David Wallace-Wells
"Neoliberalism, embraced by Republicans and Democrats, Conservatives and Labour alike, permeates everything, yet its name is seldom if ever clearly spoken. Monbiot and Hutchison have chosen to lift the veil from this 'invisible doctrine.' The result is a fiery, well-documented polemic that, though concise, combines a wealth of detail with thorough analysis."
