Just before the end of World War I, Caroline tries to survive in a Denmark that resembles a Gothic nightmare. She faces loneliness and despair, as her husband does not return from the front, and she herself is in difficult financial circumstances. In her search for a better life, her acquaintance with Dagmar, a woman who will help her find a foster family for her baby, proves to be decisive. Supporting this determined woman, Caroline will find a family, a mother, a companion, and most importantly, female solidarity that will help her emerge from the ashes of the old world as a new independent woman. Beside Dagmar, Caroline finds a new family, new hope, and the strength to take her life into her own hands. However, Caroline discovers that solidarity also has dark sides. "The Girl with the Needle" tells a powerful story highlighting the strength of women to be reborn and claim their independence, even in a world full of patriarchy and war. Director Magnus von Horn, who lives in Poland and teaches at the National Film School of Łódź, draws inspiration from things that evoke fear, always seeking humanity — even within harshness. The film references the "terrifying resemblance" that black-and-white Denmark of the 1920s may have to modern European society, as well as the issue of the right to abortion, which is being re-discussed today in Europe and America. This black-and-white film features mesmerizing cinematography and is a visual poem about the timeless position of women in a world of patriarchy, class inequality, and sexual exploitation, as well as the price of self-determination.
