This study titled "Cruelty to Production Animals - Impacts on Humans and the Environment" is based on research conducted by the Laboratory of Criminological Sciences at the Law School of Democritus University of Thrace during the period 2023-2024.
The research was carried out for the first time on a national level, and the findings are revealing both regarding the extent and the variety of forms of cruelty to production animals, within the context of intensive livestock farming, including cruelty during transportation and slaughter processes. It also highlights the public's perception and attitude towards this issue. Furthermore, it is observed that the lack of a comprehensive legislative approach to protecting production animals from cruelty creates serious gaps in their protection.
Moreover, intensive livestock farming not only violates animal welfare standards established by European regulations but also breaches rules regarding the use of chemicals, which are either prohibited (such as antibiotics) or permitted (such as antimicrobials and pesticides), and in any case have serious consequences for the health of both animals and humans.
The consequences of intensive livestock farming for the entire planet are incalculable.
