The ZWO ASI 678MC camera is uncooled and uses a CMOS sensor with an 8.3-megapixel resolution. It is suitable for imaging the Moon and planets, and can also be used to a limited extent for deep-sky imaging.
High-gain mode is activated at a gain value of 182, reducing read noise and increasing the dynamic range by one stop. Its near-infrared sensitivity allows planets to be imaged in this spectrum, and no amplifier glow (Amp Glow) is present. For deep-sky imaging, the sensor’s small size makes it well suited to targets such as compact planetary nebulae, double stars, and globular clusters.
