Mental Masks

Images of the Self and the other, the individual and the group.

“How would you describe your face?” In photos or in the mirror, some barely recognize themselves, while others see a strange face, different from their own.

The face is, of course, a reflection of the Self. However, the image of the Self amounts to a mask. And we invest mentally and emotionally in masks.

How are mental masks constructed by children and adults? What is their psychological function? Through which processes is a mask multiple? What is the raw material for constructing masks? What value do masks have in human groups?
